GF ANON Website Design

Timeline

My Role

8 weeks

UX Designer redesigning music artist’s website interface.

THE PROBLEM

Having issues creating his own branding identity and an engaging website design.

GF Anon is an independent hip-hop artist with critical acclaim and multiple albums and EPs under his name. With a new album on the horizon, we partnered and planned out a rebrand of his official website. GF Anon was having issues with his website branding so I researched his audience, competitive indie music artists, and music artist website user interface as a whole to concoct a new website design.

Operated by Squarespace, his website is currently very basic and simple with no brand identity to it. With this redesign, we plan to incorporate his underground hip-hop roots with a more polished and modernized look.

THE USERS

My interviewees were 3x more likely to support the artist when the website has artist and music information that can connect the listener to the artist.

Although I saw from research fan support is important, I’ve conducted interviews with 4 hip-hop fans who declined to support indie artists who they could not connect with socially or musically. I’ve asked them questions below to find information on why this is.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

  • Do you like hip-hop?

  • Why would you support an artist after looking at their website?

  • What motivated you to support the artist in the first place?

  • What can an artist add to their site to engage you?

USER PERSONA

THE RESEARCH

According to BandZoogle, there are 10 principles to a great musician’s website…

The ones that stood out to me were:

  • A modern layout with “simple backgrounds and content customized to fit an artist’s personality and the mood of their music”.

  • A clear call to action can be an upcoming single or album to promote on your homepage

  • Newsletter sign up pop-up so fans can support you

  • And a section telling your story, like a biography page

THE SOLUTION

This new design creates a distant style to GF ANON’s brand and gives much more personality and customization to the artist. It much more sleek, professional, and less chaotic.
